FROM.UZ – Audio Diplomacy

FROMUZcoverartFinishLayersS1 300x300 Audio Diplomacy review by Ytsejam.com

When it comes to being inventive within the world of instrumental, jam-riddled progressive rock fusion, releases have been hard to come by, however, FROM.UZ is band that incorporates a creative approach when it comes to the proportionate technicalities that they possess, and seeing is believing.

If Brian Eno would have joined King Crimson as a full time member (although there was a lot of involvement with Fripp), Audio Diplomacy is what the end result would have been, having the technicalities of and chaos of Crimson, the occasional crunch of Dream Theater, and the soundscape atmosphere of Geoff Downes’ solo material. It’s a consistent jam session all the way through, being frenzied with “Intro” (yeah, a six-minute intro) and “Spare Wheel” then lending itself to sound into smoother passages with “Wax Inhabitants Town,” but nevertheless, it’s all about going completely mad on this one.

Back to the ‘seeing is believing’ aspect of it, on the DVD that is included here (recorded in the band’s home country of Uzbekistan (hence the “from UZ” name)) you see how they come up with a lot of their sound effects, besides using many electronic samples, they use ‘Foley’ techniques (such as putting a cowbell in water to create a unique decaying sound) and employing a guitar synthesizer which gives a unique texture to ‘keyboard’ type sounds, it’s interesting, and again, inventive. The DVD also uses multi camera angles, shot in digital with different effects used to capture the momentary effect of the music. As for the performance itself, it’s tight and flawless.

This is a band that would be welcome with open arms within the NEARfest crowd, the music is highly technical, sophisticated, and will be ear candy for those who love progressive music on the edgy side of things.
